The label doesn’t tell the whole story

European tyre labelling covers three criteria: Rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise. Although this is a step in the right direction, other factors such as longevity or dry braking need to be taken into account, to get a complete picture of a tyre’s performance.

Despite the essential role they play for safety and fuel consumption, the average driver still considers tyres to be of little interest. When it’s time to change them, he relies on his local garage or takes advantage of the Offer of the Week, without necessarily taking the time to compare the performance of different tyres.

The implementation of European tyre labelling at sales outlets should help change this situation.   Indeed, with a rating system for tyre performance based on three criteria – rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise - the consumer can compare the different tyres that meet his needs and his budget.

This measure is a real step forward for consumer information. However, other criteria must be taken into account to evaluate the real performance of a tyre. Car magazines and tyre manufacturers are quick to remind us.

Car magazines point out that the tyre test results published in their columns are based on around fifteen different criteria. As for tyre manufacturers, they claim that they measure up to 50 different characteristics to evaluate their prototype’s performance.

So, when it’s time to change your tyres, what criteria other than those listed on the label should be taken into account? Here are three other criteria that most tyre manufacturers consider to be important:

  • Longevity. If the economic and environmental impact of a tyre is taken into consideration, this criterion comes right after rolling resistance. Indeed, a tyre with slow, even wear may give an extra year’s use compared with another tyre.
  •  Cornering grip.  In terms of safety, this is a very important factor. According to the Accidentology Chair at the University of Dresden, 25% of accidents occur when cornering. 
  • Braking on dry roads. Contrary to popular belief, 70% of accidents occur on dry roads, say experts from the University of Dresden, thus suggesting that this criterion deserves to be added to the European labelling criteria.

Of course, other equally interesting criteria could also be added:  Resistance to aquaplaning, high speed stability, responsiveness on dry roads, absorption of road irregularities …

To find information, you can refer to test conducted by independent organisations (TÜV SÜD, Adac…) on behalf of car magazines or automobile clubs.
