The aims of tyre labelling
In 2009, the European Commission took the decision to introduce tyre labelling. This legislation has a three-fold objective: Improve road safety, help consumers make more informed choices when buying tyres and reduce the environmental impact of tyres.

Since 1st November 2012, all tyres designed for passenger cars, SUVs, vans and heavy goods vehicles, produced after 1st July 2012 and sold in a European Union country must display a standard label. This label provides the consumer with information on three tyre performances: Fuel consumption, wet grip and external rolling noise.
The main focus for Brussels: The tyre’s energy efficiency
You have probably noticed: The form and colour codes used on tyre labels are similar to the energy label used for household appliances, cars or apartments. This is no coincidence. With this legislation, the European legislator aims to raise drivers’ awareness on a criterion, which has been overlooked until now: The tyre’s energy efficiency, i.e. its contribution to the vehicle’s fuel consumption and, subsequently, CO2 emissions.
With this label, consumers can now easily buy tyres with a high fuel efficiency rating. The advantage is two-fold: On one hand, consumers save fuel, and on the other hand, they contribute to the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Other criteria: Safety and quality of life
European tyre labelling highlights wet grip as well as external rolling noise, performances which relate to safety and quality of life, respectively.
With European tyre labelling, the consumer is better informed. He can compare tyres based on other criteria than the brand or price and become more independent when it comes to buying tyres.
