Designed based on years of experience gained in Nordic countries, tyre manufacturer Continental has developed a comprehensive portfolio of winter tyres with the Scandinavia range.
No one disputes the need to fit winter tyres as soon as weather conditions deteriorate. It is therefore accepted that below 7 degrees Celsius, standard tyres harden and their overall performance is compromised. Lateral guidance, traction and braking performance are found to be lacking.
On the steering axle, the interlocking effect of micro-sipes ensure maximum grip on slippery roads. On the drive axle, the tread blockdesign (a tread depth of up to 22 mm) improves traction and ensures long tyre life. On snow covered roads, with the specifically designed tread that optimises steering and lateral guidance on the steering axle, traction and braking force on the drive axle and grip on trailer axles, the Scandinavia range exceeds the requirements of the 3PMSF symbol (3 Peaks Mountain Snow Flake, the European label certifying a genuine winter tyre). With this label, Continental estimates that the traction of a truck increases by 40 % whereas braking distances at 50 km/h are 10 metres shorter than with a standard tyre.
In addition to its specific 22.5 inch range for long distance applications, Continental has also developed its winter range in 17.5 and 19.5 inch sizes used for distribution transport and heavy loads, becoming de facto the first tyre manufacturer to satisfy winter tyre needs for all categories of trucks weighing over 12 tonnes.
Nor has commercial passenger transport been forgotten. The Conti UrbanScandinavia and Scandinavia HSW2 Coach range(for all axles) meets safety requirements and reduces noise levels without sacrificing passenger ride comfort.
