Land of records

When you are a sports car manufacturer and you want to prove the value of your models, the large track at Nürburgring is a popular choice. By using the lap time scale and admitting that most new sports models come to Nürburgring, this provides a fairly precise ranking of the parties involved. As such, Porsche came to Nürburgring a few months ago with its new supercar, the 918 Spyder, with the firm intention of beating the lap record for a production car. And Porsche was largely successful, with a lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds. Never before has a production sports car managed to complete a lap of the Nordschleife as fast. And, it was with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The quest to break the lap record on the Nordschleife now touches almost all sports car categories. In the fastest all wheel drive segment, it was the Megane RS that held the fastest lap time until Seat sent its brand new Leon Cupra R. Fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, the Spanish brand’s compact car set a lap time of under 8 minutes (7 minutes and 58 seconds to be precise), and therefore, smashed the record set by Renault by more than 10 full seconds. To achieve this, the Iberian bomb counted on a four cylinder engine producing 280 hp and the tread design of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, the most competitive tyre from Michelin’s road range on the track. It remains to be seen how long it is before this new record is broken.
