WTO creates a group of experts to resolve the China/USA dispute
On Tuesday last, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) announced the creation of a group of experts in charge of ruling on China’s complaint concerning American import taxes on Chinese tyres.
China complained last September to WTO’s dispute resolution body, deeming the American decision to raise import duties on private car and light vehicle tyres protectionist. According to Beijing, this is a “serious form of protectionism which undermines Chinese-American economic and trade ties and the start of a world economic upturn". For their part, the United States point to a “threefold rise in volume” of Chinese tyre imports over the last four years, reaching 1.8 billion dollars and causing 14% job losses in the sector, where production fell by 25% during the same period.
