Nokian WR SUV 3: a high performance winter tyre for SUVs
Nokian continues to renew its winter tyre range. After presenting its Hakkapeliitta line dedicated to Nordic tyre, the Finnish tyre manufacturer is now introducing the third generation of the WR SUV, a standard winter tyre designed for all sizes of SUVs. Its strengths: Safe handling and relentless grip in all winter road conditions - dry or wet roads, on slush, fresh snow, ice …

With the new WR SUV 3, Nokian is targeting SUV owners who want to enjoy the benefits a high performance tyre has to offer regardless of winter road conditions. The Nordic tyre specialist specifically underlines the exceptional grip its tyre delivers on snow and slush, its handling qualities and directional stability, even at high speed, as well as its high resistance to aquaplaning.
Excellent handling in all road conditions
Featuring the brand’s latest winter tyre technology, the Nokian WR SUV 3 boasts exemplary handling qualities in all road conditions: Snow, wet or dry roads. Tested in various regions of Europe, including the famous Nokian Ivalo Testing Centre, in Lapland, the Nokian WR SUV 3 has a symmetric directional tread pattern that provides excellent handling characteristics. Its longitudinal centre rib offers remarkable driving stability on all road surfaces; especially at high speeds. This new tread pattern also provides soft and precise braking performance, which helps reduce fuel consumption.
Deep transverse grooves and two polished main grooves effectively clear water to reduce the risk of aquaplaning on wet or snow covered roads.
Tread block stabilisers next to the centre rib and longitudinal grooves provide additional rigidity and improve handling and driving stability on dry roads.
Finally the system of 3D Lock Sipes, which stretch from shoulder to shoulder, guarantee excellent handling in corners. The system supports the tread block when the sipe opens by means of a locking system built into the sipe. Advantages:
A longer tyre life and improved wear resistance.
Optimal grip on snow covered roads
The Nokian WR SUV 3 winter tyre tread blocks have been optimised for grip, especially on fresh snow. Heavy siping on the tread blocks take over on rainy days. The tyre offers a precise driving response and its impressive handling characteristics come from a balanced ratio of lateral and longitudinal grip. The tyre has better grip properties than its predecessor, the Nokian WR G2 SUV, on snow or on dry roads, when cornering or changing lanes, even at high speed.
The rubber compound has been developed to adapt to changing conditions and high speeds. The high silica content optimises tyre grip on wet roads. The tread compound also contains rapeseed oil, which maximises the tyre’s resistance to tears while increasing snow and ice grip. As such, the tyre is more durable, with no compromise on performance.
As for European tyre labelling, the Nokian WR SUV 3 is rated B for fuel economy and C for wet grip (these ratings may change depending on tyre sizes).
Indicators to easily monitor tyres
Nokian has equipped its tyre with several wear indicators. This first is in the form of numbers marked on the centre rib of the tyre indicating the tread depth in millimetres. The numbers disappear as the tyre wears down. The second indicator, patented by Nokian, is a snowflake symbol. Also located on the centre rib, it remains visible to a tread depth of 4mm. Beyond this limit, it disappears, a warning that the tyre no longer offers the same protection against aquaplaning and that it’s time to buy new tyres.
To complete the measure, Nokian has also marked information regarding the correct inflation pressure and installation location on the sidewall.
The Nokian WR SUV 3 will be available in autumn 2013 in 37 sizes from 15 inches to 17 inches to cover all sizes of SUVs. Note that most tyres will be available with the highest possible load capacity.
