Michelin launches the Pilot Sport Cup 2 - the fastest road legal tyre in its range

Michelin’s best sports tyre?
Do you remember a few months back, Mercedes presented the SLS AMG Black Series, the high end version of its super sports car. With a V8 engine producing 630 hp and a more radical look, it is also the first car in the world to fit the brand new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. Finally, a few days ago, Michelin officially presented its new tyre which promises to be the French tyre manufacturer’s best performing sports tyre. A tyre also found at Frankfurt on the “Speciale”, the latest super car model of the Ferrari 458, but also on the Porsche 918 Spyder which is also said to be an extremely fast car.
Michelin has set the tone: The Pilot Sport Cup 2 is a radical tyre, which sits at the very top of its sports range. In this range, although the tyre is more track oriented, it remains road legal just like the Pirelli Corsa Trofeo R.
An advanced technological development
As pointed out by Dominique Aimon, Vice-President of Technical and Scientific Communication at Michelin, the Pilot Sport Cup 2 features technologies already used to manufacture other high performance tyres at Michelin, like for example, the aramid fibre belt or the tread compound with two different types of rubber on the inside and outside of the tread. These technologies have been further developed for this new tyre.
However, this tyre differs through the introduction of a number of new high-tech features. In particular, the bead region is 10% wider to increase the tyre’s stiffness and improve responsiveness and steering precision. The tyre also features the “Track Variable Contact Patch 3.0”, a process that ensures that more rubber is always in contact with the road, especially when subjected to high forces when cornering.
On paper, this tyre guarantees superior performance. This has been verified through the extraordinary lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds set by the Porsche 918 Spyder on the Nürburgring track. This is an absolute record for a production car on this track.
The Pilot Sport Cup 2 is already available as original equipment (exclusive) on the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series, Ferrari 458 Speciale and the Porsche 918 Spyder. It should soon be fitting other sports models with a high performance philosophy, and of course it will also be available on the market as a replacement tyre in a wide range of sizes at the beginning of 2014.
